In south Africa a child is raped every three minutes according to the trade union solidarity helping hand results in 2009. According to IBT article the top 5 countries with the highest rates of child sexual abuse, say that many people in south Africa believe that having sexual intercourse with a virgin can cure HIV/AIDS because it cleanses the body. This belief has increased child sexual abuse cases because it motivated child rape.
In 2012 India passed the protection of children from sexual offences act, this act helps the child report the abuse and gives them an investigation and trial. In the united states CAC says that an adult retrospective studies show that 1 in 4 women have been sexually abused before the age of 18. For men 1 in 6 men have been sexually abused before the age of 18. “This will mean that there are more than 42 million adult survivors of child abuse in the US.”-CAC According to unite for sight article many children who get sexually abuse or sexually exploited are in higher risk of being infected with HIV/AIDS or other std around the world especially in countries like Asia and Africa.
In places like Nicaragua child sexual abuse is seen as a social norm. Al jazeera came out with a news article that explains why the child sexual abuse rates are going up. The article goes into detail of an abuse case that happen in Nicaragua where a twelve years old was raped by her 34 years old cousin's boyfriend inside the church that he worked as a caretaker. In Nicaragua sexual abuse in girls is so common that it's seen as a natural encounter and its approved to show machismo.
“Sexual violence against girls is so brutal and so naturalized in the country that it is considered normal, and machismo underlies it all.- Mayte Ochoa, reproductive rights organisation” many times the abuse is only reported because the child got pregnant and the family isn't able to afford raising the child so they need child support from the father which is the offender. “Wendy Flores, a lawyer from the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights, told Al Jazeera: "Young sexual abuse victims and their families mainly want help to claim financial support from the perpetrator, the baby's father, as they cannot afford another mouth to feed."
