Child sexual abuse is caused by neglect, influence over the child and powerlessness. Many children that are neglected want to feel loved and sometimes they feel like the offender is the only thing that they have close to love. This causes the child to feel like the abuse is normal and doesn't report it. In most cases the offender has the most influence over the child because the the child is familiar with them. Many times the offender is a family member, neighbor, or family friend. This makes it difficult for the child to report the abuse because they don't want to get in trouble or they are being threatened. Many children feel powerlessness because they don't know how to react they feel confused because they don't understand why the abuse happened to them, also they feel like it was their fault that they were abused because they feel like they provoked the offender to view them it in a sexual way causing them to act out and sexually abuse them.
My issue is a social, and cultural issue. In south Africa it is known that there is a cultural belief that if a person that has HIV has intercourse with a virgin then they will be cured. "The idea that having sex with a virgin cleanses you of AIDS does exist and there have been reported cases of this as a motivating factor for child rape. " Dr Rachel Jewkes, director of the MRC's Gender and Health Research Group”. In Nicaragua it is a seen as a social norm to see a child being sexually abused because it happens so often. “Sexual violence against girls is so brutal and so naturalized in the country that it is considered normal, and machismo underlies it all.- Mayte Ochoa, reproductive rights organisation” In most cases in Nicaragua the abuse is reported only because the victim got pregnant and the parents can't afford to raise the child so they need child support from the father/offender.
My issue is related to Archetypal criticism. Many organization use the blue ribbon to bring awareness to the issue. The blue ribbon movement comes from the blue ribbon campaign.
